Folk legend’s gig supports Maddy’s mission
Steve Knightley, the song-writing force behind the hugely successful folk band Show of Hands, is bringing his solo ‘Grow Your Own Gig’ tour to Perran Ar Worthal, Memorial Village Hall on March 25. This special concert is a unique opportunity to hear one of the UK’s leading folk musicians up close and personal in an intimate village hall atmosphere.
The gig is in support of Maddy Roberts and part of the profits will go towards her incredible journey to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan. The trip will not only teach young scouts about global cultures but also help them to develop their skills. Maddy spent a week with Eight Wire gaining work experience last year and was so good she was invited back that summer. She is currently completing her GCSEs at Penryn College and is set for an A* in media studies.
The gig is part of Steve’s Grow Your Own Gig tour that he came up with to help bring live music to village halls and bring communities together through music. He is encouraging village hall committees and organisations to become small music promoters. The gig is being organised by Maddy and her father Mick Roberts an agricultural journalist.
Maddy said: “The cultural scouting exchange is something I really wanted to do in order to both grow my experience of the world and to help in cultural exchange.
“I wrote Steve a letter which he got when he performed in Devoran Village Hall last year. I was amazed when he said he would be happy to do a gig and split the profits to help. He’s not only one of the folk greats, he’s also a great guy.”
